چکیده

Ferromagnetism in graphene is fascinating, but it is still a big challenge for practical applications due to the weak magnetization. In order to enhance the magnetization, here, we design plasma-enabled graphene nanopetals with ultra-long defective edges of up to 105 m/g, ultra-dense lattice vacancies, and hydrogen chemisorptions. The designed graphene nanopetals display robust ferromagnetism with large saturation magnetization of up to 2 emu/g at 5 K and 1.2 emu/g at room temperatures. This work identifies the plasmaenabled graphene nanopetals as a promising candidate for graphene-based magnetic devices. 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Room-temperature ferromagnetism of graphene.

Aiming at molecular-based magnets, ferromagnetism of pure carbon-based materials is fundamentally and technologically extremely important for many applications. While it is still not fully understood, many recent theoretical works have suggested that one-atom-thick two-dimensional graphene materials may show ferromagnetism due to the existence of various defects or topological structures as the...

Room-temperature ferromagnetism in graphitic petal arrays.

We report room-temperature ferromagnetism of graphitic petal arrays grown on Si substrates by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition without catalyst. The samples have been characterized by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to confirm the absence of possible ferromagnetic impurities. The petals exhibit ferromagnetic hysteresis with saturation magnetization of ∼4.67 emu cm(-3) and c...

Magnetism in disordered graphene and irradiated graphite.

The magnetic properties of disordered graphene and irradiated graphite are systematically studied using a combination of mean-field Hubbard model and first-principles calculations. By considering large-scale disordered models of graphene, I conclude that only single-atom defects can induce ferromagnetism in graphene-based materials. The preserved stacking order of graphene layers is shown to be...

Proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene revealed by the anomalous Hall effect.

We demonstrate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single-layer graphene exchange coupled to an atomically flat yttrium iron garnet (YIG) ferromagnetic thin film. The anomalous Hall conductance has magnitude of ∼0.09(2e(2)/h) at low temperatures and is measurable up to ∼300  K. Our observations indicate not only proximity-induced ferromagnetism in graphene/YIG with a large exchange interaction, ...
